A Shelter In The Time of Storm by Nathan
Here is Nathan singing A Shelter In The Time of Storm. Blogger didn't have an easy way to put up audio so I made it into a video. This has become his favorite song lately. It was the song his class was learning in January for choir at church. For this recording, he is reading the words, but I've heard him sing most all of this on his own with no words around.

bubbles
Caroline got a bubble blower for her birthday. (Say that five times fast.) A couple weeks ago, we got it out for the kids to play with. We had to try several different locations for the blower because the wind kept changing, but they had a good ol' time! (And no, it wasn't really cold enough for that hat - she just loves to wear it.)

bed transition

my big girl
My little girl is getting big! We have had a couple major milestones lately. On January 29th, we had "Big Girl Day". We didn't make a huge deal out of it, but we did start a couple new things.
First, we started some official potty training. From our past couple attempts (not at all whole-hearted), I discovered that Caroline could care less if she wet her training pants as long as she was wearing the plastic ones over them. So, this time around, we went just with the training pants. (For those of you who have not yet traveled this road, they're just cotton undies with a thicker mid-section.) This way, when she wets, she makes a little bit of a mess. She doesn't like being wet, so that's a good thing! We have also begun giving her 2 M&M's every time she actually gets something in the potty. This is a very good motivator for her. She will tell you "two m m's" while holding up her right hand with all five fingers out. It's very cute! Honestly, I'd rather avoid candy motivation, but I figure that a few M&M's (what...maybe 16) across the day isn't a big deal.
So, we're a week and a half into it now, and Caroline is doing pretty well. The last couple days, she has only had a couple messes. I think her brain is at least getting the idea that she can't just go whenever it happens to come. Progress! I'm hoping that she'll be doing even better by this time next week. She's sticking with it, so we are too...but I'd rather her really get it sooner rather than later. Oh yeah...and she's still in diapers for sleeping and naps.
On that note, we also moved Caroline into Nathan's room for sleeping on January 29th. She has done very well with the transition. Matt and I were concerned that she would really want to be in the crib because when we talked to her about it beforehand, she would point to the crib and say "my bed". However, she has not even complained at all about being in Nathan's bed. She is sleeping on the bottom bed and Nathan is sleeping on the top. She did have a couple days where she fell out of the bed at naptime, but that seems to have stopped. I've also been very impressed that the kids haven't done too much goofing off. There have been a couple nights where we had to tell them to be quiet, but they quickly settled down and went on to sleep. I'm so glad that this transition has been easy! Eventually, once the new baby is sleeping through the night, Caroline will move back into her room. Of course, that requires finding her a bed first! :)
I haven't updated on Caroline's talking lately, so I thought I would do that along with this update as well. Since the beginning of December, she has really picked up a TON of words. With each word that she learns, she immediately starts trying to use it. It didn't take long before she was putting things together into simple sentences. It's so cute! I just love hearing her little voice! Some of my favorite things that she says right now are "Daddy is?" and "g-gain" (meaning again). I also love to hear her working on putting things together. She'll say a three or four word sentence, but have slight pauses between the words as she thinks about how they need to go together. I love to listen to her knowing that her brain is churning away. And you know, it's just fun when they learn to talk and you can have conversations with them!
On a much more minor note, I quit using baby laundry detergent on Caroline's clothes sometime in January. I know it seems silly, but I just didn't want to let go of her baby smell! I finally gave in, though. I figured that I should start washing her clothes with everyone else's before the baby comes. Then, it can be the new baby's smell before long.
For a few notes on personality and such...Caroline is a fun, silly, smart little girl. She loves Nathan to death! They play together great (with a few bits of fussing). They love to be silly together. Caroline still loves to imitate Nathan and wishes that she could go to school with him. She misses him when he's gone but loves to pick him up because his teacher gives her candy. Caroline is independent and a risk taker. When we drop her off at church, she rarely even looks back to say "bye". She has no fear. To this point, it hasn't gotten her in too much trouble, but I'm sure it will in the days ahead. Caroline likes to color and knows that the white crayon only works on dark paper. She loves clothes and shoes and especially anything purple.
Her favorite food right now is probably raisins. She loves them and asks for them regularly. She also has a preference for Honey Nut Cheerios. When I ask her if she wants Cheerios, she says "kind?" That means that she wants the kind that she likes...Honey Nut. :) She is also a fan of dill pickles and mushrooms (not together). She likes pizza, but it keeps her up at night if she eats too much too late.
